Style & Psychology ~ By Maria Ioannou for Pick Up The Thread

Many thanks to http://inanadreamlyworld.com/ for hosting us, a rising and promising blog, which treats fashion as the ultimate form of self-care and seeks and seeks psychology everywhere🌸. From the simplest but most important, everyday moments, to the most difficult and the ones that shape us.

What could be an easy definition for psychology?

  • '' Psychology is the reason of the soul. What the heart, mind and body tell us. The first unfiltered thought we make in the morning and the last before we go to sleep. "Psychology is everywhere in our lives and at the same time it is a whole science."

How could style and psychology be linked?

  • " The personal style of each person, to a large extent, expresses his personality. It is a way to discover and get to know ourselves, as well as to present and communicate who we are. Appearance is a first way of connecting that can directly reflect us and what we feel. When we accept each different style, we accept each person individually and how magical it can be when this is the first step to get to know that person better or even let him/her surprise us! "

Does the styling reveal our psychological state?

  • '' Style can reveal our identity, but that does not mean that it does not adapt to our psychological state. It is no coincidence that during the period of the lockdowns, many choose overalls and comfortable clothes that make us feel more intimate, warmer, safer, at a time when we feel vulnerable and insecure. There are many who choose to dress as they would go to work, maintaining a sense of regularity. These situations can bring out our personal style, as well as a personal experience. In general, when we feel happy and energetic, we can take more care of our image, which otherwise we may not have the energy and willingness to do. We often choose unconsciously, hastily we will say what we will wear and this choice can be directly related to our mental state. "

What do the color palettes we choose to wear show?

  • " Behind the color choices of designers, painters, everyday people, there is a whole science, the psychology of colors. Many times when we feel creative and energetic, we will choose colors more vivid, bright. Similarly, when we feel more "cloudy", it is not unreasonable to turn to more hazy color choices. However, like fashion, psychology can not be sealed. There are many examples where people feel more free and connected, with colors that others would not choose. That's what makes us unique! "

Why when we do not feel psychologically strong, do we wear dark colors?

  • " I am reminded of the Greek designer Mary Katrantzou, who designs almost exclusively clothes with strong patterns and colors, at the same time she wears only black. So it's like a white canvas that allows inspiration to grow. Respectively Steve Jobs wore a pair of jeans, the same shoes and a black blazer every day, as he felt that this minimized his choices and increased his productivity. Therefore there can be no general rule, even for the same person. This is what makes fashion so magical. It embraces and accepts everything, with whatever it brings with it, regardless of colour, texture and material, as long as it has emotion and character. The most important thing is to listen and recognize our deepest needs and feelings, beautiful or difficult, and to take care of ourselves by dressing in what expresses us most at that moment."

Why do we make big changes in ourselves during periods when we do not feel well psychologically, from a change in haircut and hair color, to even against the style we served?

  • " It is no coincidence when we choose to make a big change in ourselves. A change in us also marks a change within us or a change in our lives. An opportunity for one restart that may be necessary, or the moment when something ends to start something new and that ultimately reveals more power than we think. It is of great value, however, to understand where our need for change can come from. When we feel like we are losing ourselves in it, it may be a good time to take some time and think about why now, what it aims to do, or what else it can refuse to change and try to hide. Let us not forget that a change is good when it is felt, by us and for us."

Does shopping therapy has power?

  • " We can not deny that shopping has an influence on us. We have all indulged in and we have felt the joy and liveliness that it causes to us. Of course, we have all been faced with a purchase that we made in a hurry as we felt at that moment, but end up regretting it. Taking care of ourselves and dressing in warm or cool, comfortable clothes, clothes that we have chosen, that make us feel beautiful and that we are ourselves in them, is a great expression of self-care. But when we focus only on buying, the joy and pleasure are always as short as the time that takes clothes to reach to our closet. So we indulge in a perpetual shopping process, which in the end ends up becoming exhausting physically and mentally. The next time we feel this need, it is important to consider our true needs and motivations. Do we really want to take care of ourselves or is it a way to temporarily feel better? ''

During the lockdown period, taking care of ourselves and dressing like we would go for a walk, does it help psychologically to be stronger in everything that happens?

  • " Certainly taking care of ourselves will be something that will rejuvenate and activate us. It is important on some days to choose to dress as we would for coffee or dinner and still be at home. Let's call a loved one and eat "together". Let's put on our gym clothes and go out for a walk. The sun and fresh air will always be there. Even if we put a little lipstick or perfume we can feel more connected to ourselves. Let's dress as everyone feels more secure. Some days let 's accept that it will be harder than others and that' s okay. We will all have such days. Let us then consciously choose to stay in our pajamas and emotions. Let's enjoy our coffee a little more that day. Undoubtedly we live in a time when everything is changing at a very fast pace. This has led us to experience a multitude of emotions such as insecurity, fear and anger. It is very important to listen to the reorganizations that take place within us and to take care of ourselves above all. So what more self-carish than our own therapy. The greatest tool for enhancing mental resilience. Now that we are given this opportunity even at the convenience of our own home, let us see it as an opportunity to feel stronger and thus cope with any subsequent difficulty and change."
